1. Select Products for One Clear Customer
A first range should solve a defined problem for a defined buyer. A professional rodent-control family may combine PT-404PV, PT-203CL and PT-701T. A retail insect-monitoring family may combine PT-304, PT-305 and an insect glue trap.
This approach creates coherent packaging and content. It also makes reordering easier than launching unrelated items with different instructions and audiences.
2. Separate Product Customization from Packaging Customization
Product customization can include selected resin color, coating, silk-screen print, label or embossed branding. Packaging customization can include a color box, card, sleeve, pouch, manual and export carton. These options have different minimum quantities and development risks.
Ask the factory to confirm each option on the exact model. A logo area shown on a plastic bait station does not prove that the same method will work on galvanized steel or an adhesive board.
3. Define Who Owns Claims, Barcodes and Market Compliance
The brand or importer should approve trademarks, claims, barcode data and destination-market labeling. GS1 states that the brand owner is normally responsible for assigning the GTIN. For Amazon programs, the seller should obtain and verify marketplace-specific labels in the seller account. The factory can reserve print areas, place approved data and support technical review, but should not invent codes or unverified claims.
4. Use Product-Specific Instructions
Instructions should match the supplied product, not a generic category. A snap trap requires setting and placement guidance. A multi-catch trap requires inspection and handling guidance. A bait station needs correct key, anchoring, service and approved-use information. An outdoor mole trap needs model-specific setting diagrams and warnings.
5. Approve Samples in the Correct Order
- Confirm the standard functional sample.
- Approve product color and branding method where applicable.
- Approve the packaging dieline and artwork proof.
- Inspect a physical packaging sample for fit and readability.
- Approve a pre-production sample if the project includes structural changes.
Screen images are useful for layout, but they do not confirm surface finish, product fit or barcode print quality.
6. Plan the Repeat Order Before the First Order
Keep an approved specification, artwork version, color reference, sample record and carton drawing. If a component or artwork changes, the revision should be recorded. This is especially important for importers and brands that will reorder the same SKU over several seasons.
