A pantry moth trap can reveal adult activity, but it cannot remove larvae developing inside a bag of food. PT-302 should be used as a monitoring aid while the operator finds the source, removes affected material and corrects storage and cleaning conditions.
Identify the pest before selecting a lure
Confirm that the insects are pantry or stored-product moths rather than clothes moths or small flies. Look for webbing, larvae, cast skins and damaged kernels in flour, cereal, nuts, seeds, pet food and other susceptible goods. Adults may fly away from the source, so the trap with the highest count does not always sit beside the infested package.
A source-finding inspection
- Check incoming stock and any recently opened product.
- Inspect package seams, shelf holes, corners and spilled material.
- Separate and dispose of affected stock under the site’s procedure.
- Vacuum and clean the shelf, then improve sealed storage and stock rotation.
- Use PT-302 monitoring points to determine whether adult activity continues.
Place for information, not convenience
Use protected positions close to susceptible storage but away from open food and food-contact surfaces. Do not crowd many lures into a small area without following the lure instructions, because competing plumes can make interpretation more difficult. Number the locations in commercial sites and compare results with stock and cleaning records.
How to interpret continued captures
Ongoing adult captures after cleaning usually justify another source search: a forgotten bag, a spill beneath fixed shelving, old animal feed or a neighbouring storage zone may remain. A falling trend supports the corrective work but should be confirmed over the relevant pest life cycle and service interval.
Private-label packaging requirements
Good retail packaging states the target moth, lure life, number of traps, replacement interval, placement restrictions and the need to inspect food.
