A clothes moth trap tells you that adult moths are present; the damage is caused by larvae hidden in natural fibres and quiet storage areas. PT-303 is therefore most valuable when it is part of a mapped inspection plan for linen rooms, wardrobes, uniform stores and textile stock.
Confirm clothes moths, not carpet beetles
Look for webbing, silken cases, larvae, frass and irregular grazing on wool, felt, feathers or other animal fibres. Carpet beetle larvae leave different evidence and are not monitored with the same pheromone system. Adult moths caught near a wardrobe are a prompt to inspect surrounding textiles, skirting edges, lint and upholstered items, not proof that one garment is the source.
Hotel and storage inspection points
- Linen rooms: check slow-moving stock, shelf edges and lint beneath racks.
- Uniform storage: inspect cuffs, collars, folds and items held for long periods.
- Guest-room wardrobes: use discreet monitoring only where housekeeping can report and service it correctly.
- Textile stockrooms: separate receiving, quarantine and long-term storage records so activity can be traced.
What to do after a capture
Inspect outward from the monitoring point. Isolate affected items and choose a textile-appropriate treatment such as professional laundering, controlled heat, freezing or another approved method. Vacuum lint and debris from protected edges and dispose of the contents securely. Improve sealed storage and move dormant stock so future inspections reach all surfaces.
Use trends rather than a single count
Number the PT-303 locations and record date, count and nearby textile changes. Repeated captures in one zone point the inspection toward that area; scattered low counts may require a wider survey. For museums or valuable collections, involve a conservator because treatment options and tolerance for damage differ from ordinary commercial textiles.

Packaging should identify the target moth, state lure and replacement information, explain that traps monitor adults and warn against adhesive contact with clothing.
