Short answer: select a live cage trap by the target species’ body size, entry behavior and site restrictions. The animal should be able to enter fully and activate the mechanism without excessive unused space. Larger is not automatically better: an oversized cage is harder to conceal, stabilize, transport and monitor.

Start with species, law and welfare
Live trapping rules vary by country, state and municipality. Some animals are protected, some may not be relocated, and some jurisdictions restrict trap types or require licensed operators. Confirm the species and legal route before deployment. Traps must be inspected frequently, protected from heat and weather, and handled to minimize stress and injury.
This guide is for professional product selection. It does not replace local wildlife regulations or an on-site assessment by a qualified operator.
CNPestech live cage size comparison
| Model | Product size | Typical format | Selection note |
|---|---|---|---|
| PT-601 | 26 × 14 × 12 cm | Compact galvanized cage | Rat-scale or similarly sized target where legally appropriate |
| PT-602 | 41 × 15.5 × 17 cm | Medium single-catch cage | Squirrel or rat applications needing more body length |
| PT-603 | 56 × 55 × 10.5 cm | Wide reinforced multi-catch format | Specialized route or entry configuration |
| PT-604 | 59 × 57 × 10 cm | Wide galvanized multi-catch format | Low-profile placement with broad entry coverage |
| PT-605 | 38 × 38 × 8 cm | Low-profile multi-catch cage | Chipmunk- or small-rodent-scale routes where permitted |
“Typical format” is a purchasing description, not a guarantee for every animal. Body size varies, and target species must be confirmed locally.
How to choose between a compact and medium cage
Use a compact cage when space is constrained
The PT-601 is 26 cm long and weighs about 320 g. It is easier to place in a protected route, but the operator must confirm that the target can enter fully and that the trigger is appropriate.
Use a medium cage when body length and approach space require it
The PT-602 is 41 cm long and weighs about 1.20 kg. The longer body provides more entry space for a squirrel- or rat-scale target while remaining manageable for routine handling.
When is a multi-catch format relevant?
Wide multi-catch formats such as the PT-603, PT-604 and PT-605 should be selected only after evaluating entry routes, likely animal numbers, inspection frequency and legal restrictions. They are not a substitute for exclusion and habitat correction.

Five sample checks for a wholesale buyer
- Door movement and complete closure on a level surface
- Trigger sensitivity and repeatability across multiple samples
- Wire spacing, weld quality and sharp-edge inspection
- Handle position and protection from the captured animal
- Carton protection against bent mesh during transport
Frequently asked questions
Is the largest cage the safest choice?
No. The cage must fit the target, route and service procedure. Excess size can reduce stability and make placement or transport more difficult.
How often should a live trap be checked?
Check it frequently and follow local legal and welfare requirements. Exposure to sun, cold, rain, predators or prolonged confinement must be prevented.
Can captured wildlife be released elsewhere?
Not automatically. Relocation may be restricted or illegal and can create welfare and disease risks. Confirm local rules before trapping.
What information should an OEM buyer provide?
Provide the target species, typical body size, market, trap format, wire finish, carton requirement and applicable regulatory or retailer tests.
