Why does placement matter so much?

UV light is only one competing cue in a real building. Daylight from an open door, bright task lighting, warm air currents, food odors and airflow can all influence insect movement. A poorly placed unit may catch few insects even when the product is functioning correctly. It may also draw insects deeper into a clean area or create a food-safety problem.

The FDA Food Code states that insect control devices should retain the insects they stun or electrocute and should not be positioned over food preparation areas where fragments could fall onto exposed food, clean equipment, utensils, linens or unwrapped single-service items.

4. Ignoring airflow

Strong supply air, exhaust or fans can redirect small flies. Review air movement and position monitoring devices on realistic flight paths rather than only where wall space is available.

5. Hiding the trap behind shelving

The light needs a clear line of sight. A blocked unit may be easy for staff to ignore and difficult for insects to detect.

6. Using one unit as the entire fly-control program

Light traps do not replace exclusion, drain cleaning, waste management, door discipline or source removal. Treat catch data as evidence that helps the IPM team locate and correct the source.

7. Failing to record catches and service dates

A trap without a service log becomes a decorative appliance. Record counts, species or insect type, glue-board condition, lamp condition and corrective actions.
